Are chairs a better option than the traditional pew?
The church is updating the sanctuary / auditorium, and I really wonder how the young see it.
Banks are much more attractive, and praying-for those who wish to use. Also, they usually book rests on the back if you are not constantly holding a hymn book, prayer book, order of service, etc. I'm all in favor of banks. If they have small cushions, they should not be uncomfortable - in fact I do not think I ever sat on a seat less comfortable than a plastic chair.
In addition, churches often prefer chairs because they can be moved and rearranged more easily (benches are very difficult to move). But chairs look tacky and cheap.I note with despair the move towards replacing benches in the church with chairs.
Why do cathedrals have chairs instead of pews?
I'm sure some have probably cathedrals benches in them, but you go to the great old and there's just a pile of chairs moving. So they could move to large standing-room only masses? Commoners were not to sit? Does anybody know this?
Hmmm, I was in the cathedral several times and have yet to see one without benches.
