Apartment building owners have more space on their hands

The violation rate for apartments in the Twin Cities grew at the highest level for several years, mainly due to the dismal job market that unemployed miners back with mom and dad and people who share units.

The average vacancy rate in the metropolitan area hit 7.3 per cent at the end of 2009, according to the activity of Minneapolis GVA Marquette Advisors, a real estate consulting firm.
